Some $90,000 is expended on a daily basis by the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) to power the buildings within the compound of City Hall with the use of a generator. And this sum of money could have been better used in the municipality’s quest to fulfil its mandate to maintain the city, according to Public Relations Officer,NFL Cheap Jerseys China, Royston King.He highlighted yesterday that the current state of affairs commenced some weeks ago when the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) sought to disconnect City Hall along with other municipal facilities due to the non-payment of electricity bills amounting to several millions.GPL had also acknowledged a debt of a few millions due to its failure to honour rates and taxes payment. However, following the intervention of Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), Justice Prem Persaud,Wholesale Adidas Hockey Jerseys, GPL had sought to reconnect all of the municipal facilities with the exception of City Hall. In fact Justice Persaud had described City Hall as the ‘trump’,NFL Jerseys Cheap, adding that it was his expectation that once the two entities were able to reach an agreement and exchange cheques, the municipal nerve centre should have been reconnected.Almost two weeks have elapsed since the entities each exchanged cheques amounting to a sum of just over $179M and yet power has not been restored to City Hall, King said. He disclosed that the move by the power company contradicts an agreement that was made by the two entities in the presence of Justice Persaud. The agreement, King said should have seen GPL reconnecting power to City Hall immediately after the exchange of cheques. As a result,China NFL Jerseys, he revealed that Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the municipality’s Financial Committee, Robert Williams, has since inked a letter to Justice Persaud which has been copied to GPL, highlighting the municipal concerns.“We were and still are disappointed that GPL has not reconnected City Hall. The thing of most concern is that GPL is aware that we don’t owe on the buildings in City Hall. All we owe for right now is for street-lighting.” And the amount owing for street-lighting, King said, is yet to be verified. He disclosed that currently a verification process is ongoing as it has been recognised that many streetlights that fall under the responsibility of the municipality do not work.Without electricity, King said that the municipality is forced to utilise about $90,000 daily to power key buildings at City Hall,Cheap Jerseys 2018, including those that house the Constabulary, the City Engineer’s Office, the Treasury, the Town Clerk, Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s Offices, with a generator. Continued power generation is required in the nights for security purposes. And though the Deputy Mayor has written highlighting the municipal concerns, King said that he is not aware that either GPL or the PUC Chairman has responded.City Mayor Hamilton Green recently told this newspaper that failure on the part of GPL to restore the supply of electricity to City Hall is nothing less than “a little bit of deception.” According to Green, he was of the understanding that once GPL and the municipality had exchanged cheques, electricity should have been restored forthwith at City Hall.He related that based on information from Acting Town Clerk,Wholesale Jerseys, Mrs Yonette Pluck-Cort, GPL had informed that the restoration decision must be made by the power company’s Board following its perusal of a payment plan from the municipality. The M&CC’s cheque paid to GPL had only partially discharge the municipal’s obligation for electricity service charges owing as at December 2009.However, King disclosed yesterday that the municipality has completed and submitted a payment plan which is expected to guide the municipality’s effort to resolve its electricity debt. Deputy Mayor Robert Williams has publicly confirmed that the detailed payment plan has been submitted to GPL and is expected to be perused by the entity’s board.Mayor Green has expressed concern over the fact that City Hall has remained the sole municipal entity GPL has chosen to leave without electricity supply. He has underscored too that streetlights have in fact accounted for the bulk of the municipality’s debt yet GPL continues to power them. And though it was agreed by the two entities that a cordial relation will ensue following the exchange of cheques, Green is adamant that things have changed for the worse. “It seems that somebody is out to punish City Hall.”In fact, it is the Mayor’s belief that the whole move comes as part of Government’s unwillingness to allow the municipality to broaden its revenue base and be in a position to function as a responsible and respectable entity. According to Green, the treatment that is being meted out to the municipality “defies all the rules of democracy.”He alluded to the municipality’s recent attempt to convert the Le Repentir Dump site to a facility that could also produce electricity. Green disclosed that discussions were had with a potential developer and all of the modalities were examined. The discussions were however brought to an abrupt end as it was highlighted by the powers that be that the municipality was in no position to undertake such a venture. “The idea was to provide electricity to the GPL grid which could provide power to people nearby…but everybody is being so deceptive, it is doing more harm than good to the municipality,” Green has asserted.
